Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone may have both been open to a lightweight fight, but it doesn't look like that'll be happening any time soon. When asked about the possibility of a lightweight bout between the two fan-favorites, UFC President Dana White revealed he remains open to it, but stated it's not close to being worked out.
"These two have been talking about this, and I said if they want to fight, I would do it, but we're nowhere close to a fight," White said during a news conference prior to UFC 235.
"We're actually looking at other fights right now for Cowboy."
One of the possible opponents White mentioned for Cerrone was Al Iaquinta. White also guessed that Conor McGregor would return this fall.
McGregor hasn't fought in the UFC since last October when he lost in a lightweight title bid against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. A post-fight brawl resulted in a suspension for both fighters, with McGregor getting suspended for six months. He's eligible to return on April 6.
Cerrone called out McGregor after defeating Alexander Hernandez at UFC Fight Night in January. McGregor, who apparently had been watching, quickly responded on social media. He congratulated Cerrone on the win and said he would fight him.
White's comments came just a day after Cerrone took to social media to hype a fight with McGregor. He included a possible date of July 6 in Las Vegas.
