It's been a tough road for former UFC Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn, who set the record for most consecutive losses at UFC 237. The UFC Hall of famer has now lost seven fights in row, with his last win taking place back in 2010 over Matt Hughes.
Deemed one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of this generation, many have questioned White’s decision to book the former two-division champion despite the fact that Penn hasn’t put on a noteworthy performance in years. However, the UFC President has finally stepped in on the situation and stated on
TSN that he can no longer let the Hall of Famer fight anymore as it’s evident that Penn’s best days are behind him (transcript courtesy of mmafighting.com):
“I love B.J. Penn. B.J. Penn is one of the legends of the sport. This is a young man’s game. I gave him a lot of opportunities because he’s B.J. and because of the relationship that I’ve had with B.J. his entire career and before that. But I can’t do that again. I can’t do it again.”
Penn has yet to respond to White’s comment about never letting him fight again. Despite the major skid in the latter stages of his career, the former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight Champion will always be regarded as one of the best fighters that’s ever graced the sport of mixed martial arts. Unless Penn decides to fight for another promotion, he’ll retire with a record of 16 wins and 14 losses.
