Daniel Cormier has apparently been stripped of his light heavyweight title. At least that's according to
the official UFC website, which no longer lists Cormier as the light heavyweight champion. Among the list of title holders, the light heavyweight division has a faceless silhouette with the words "To be determined..."
Back in July, Daniel Cormier, who was already the UFC light heavyweight champion, stepped into the Octagon to compete for the heavyweight belt. Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic in the first round and became a two-division champion. Immediately, there were concerns about Cormier's ability to defend both belts, despite the fighter's willingness to do so.
Following his victory, it was pretty clear that Cormier was on track to face Brock Lesnar next in a heavyweight title match, with the promotion stating Cormier would be stripped of the 205-pound title. Instead of Lesnar, though, Cormier was booked short notice to defend his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 this weekend.
With Cormier unable to defend the 205-pound title, the UFC looked elsewhere and booked a rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. The winner of the match in December will apparently become the new UFC light heavyweight champion, strongly implying that Cormier will be stripped of that title if he hasn't already been.
Either way, it looks like time is up for Cormier as a two-division champion. However, Cormier argues that if he loses to Lewis this weekend, he should still have the opportunity to defend the 205-pound title again instead of being forced to give up both belts just for losing one.
