A UFC and Strikeforce veteran and perhaps an MMA legend seems to be finally hanging up the gloves.
“Disappointing performance to say the least,” Healy wrote. “I thought about this a lot recently and that was my last fight. I can no longer compete at a high level. It’s been a hell of a ride. I’ve gone places and seen things I never thought I would.”
Healy is a 16-year veteran of mixed martial arts. He’s competed for numerous promotions over the years, including the IFL, WEC, MFC, Titan FC and most recently ACB. Healy (31-24) was coming off a win over Brendan Loughnane last July coming into Saturday’s bout.
From 2011 until Strikeforce folded, Healy was one of the top lightweights in the organization. He won his UFC debut over Kurt Holobaugh in 2013 and then beat Jim Miller at UFC 159, only to have the win overturned due to a failed drug test for marijuana. Healy lost his victory and $130,000 in bonus money in the process. After that, he went on a four-fight losing streak and was cut from the UFC. Those losses came against extremely tough competition — Khabib Nurmagomedov, Bobby Green, Jorge Masvidal and Gleison Tibau.
“I’ve had a chance to make friends and memories all over the world,” Healy said. “MMA gave me a life I only could have dreamed of. I will now focus on helping the next generation become successful and finally getting my BJJ black belt.”
