Ray Borg is officially done with MMA.
A few weeks ago, the 27-year-old was one of the fighters released from his UFC contract after fighting within the company for six years. Borg was originally scheduled to face Nathan Maness on August 1, 2020 at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan, but once again, the bantamweight pulled out of the bout for undisclosed reasons.
Many assumed that his constant withdrawals and weight misses were the ultimate reason that the company finally cut ties with Borg, with the former UFC star himself confirming that his time came to an end in the UFC due to his consistent problems in and outside of the octagon.
Still, Borg sounded optimistic about his future in MMA, but wanted to get his life together first before continuing on with his MMA career. However, Borg finally confirmed that he’ll be moving onto the next chapter of his life as the bantamweight fighter announced his retirement on Instagram (Transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting):
“never did I think retirement would come at the age of 27 but some decisions are harder than others,” later adding “it may be time to move on to the next chapter of my life.”
Borg had fought in the UFC since 2014 and scored notable victories over Louis Smolka, Jussier Formiga, and Shane Howell. Borg got a chance to fight Demetrius Johnson for the UFC Flyweight title at UFC 216 and while the challenger gave Johnson a run for his money, Borg ultimately lost via submission in the fifth round. He ends his career with a professional record of 13 wins and 5 losses.
