Last week, footage surfaced over an incident that took place back in April, which saw former UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor strike an older gentleman in a Pub. The reported reason stems from the patron refusing to drink McGregor’s whiskey, along with bad mouthing the UFC star about his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov last year.
The former two-division champion had not spoken about the incident since the footage was released until now, as McGregor expressed his remorse over losing his cool and punching the patron at the bar (transcript courtesy of ESPN):
“I was in the wrong,” McGregor told Ariel Helwani of
ESPN. “
That man deserved to enjoy his time in the pub without having it end the way it did. I must come here before you and take accountability and take responsibility. I owe it to the people that have been supporting me. I owe it to my mother, my father, my family. I owe it to the people who trained me in martial arts. That’s not who I am. That’s not the reason why I got into martial arts or studying combat sports. The reason I got into it was to defend against that type of scenario.”
An investigation is still being done by the local authorities in Ireland, but the results of that investigation have yet to be revealed. On the UFC front, there doesn’t appear to be any sort of punishment for ‘Notorious’; however, should McGregor receive any consequences for his actions, then he’ll accept whatever comes his way:
“Whatever comes my way, I will face it,” he said.
“Whatever comes my way, I deserve it. I will face this head on. I will not hide from it. I was in the wrong. It was completely unacceptable behavior for a man in my position.”
