Bellator 187 was taking place in Dublin, Ireland, the same town UFC Lightweight champion Conor McGregor was born and fights out of. A Straight Blast Gym fighter teammate of McGregor's, Irish welterwight Charlie Ward, was fighting at said event in which Mcgregor was there to cheer him on.
After Ward won the fight via knockout after the first round, McGregor immediately jumps the cage and storms in to celebrate with his fellow teammate. Unfortunately, the referee never cleared Conor or anyone else to enter the cage and immediately told him to leave.
The situation escalated as McGregor got angry at the referee for trying to force him to leave; shouting and pushing the man until other officials escorted McGregor out the cage.
However, the incident didn't end there. While McGregor did leave the cage willingly after trying to reenter as he shouted at the refree, he did a lap around the stage waving to the fans in attendance. Another video shown from TMZ, sees McGregor slapping a Bellator staffer as he tried to get back into the cage. Later that evening, Bellator released a statement regarding McGregor striking one their employees, Mike Johnson.
“We’re aware of the in-cage altercation involving Conor McGregor and a Bellator staff member,” the statement, via spokesperson Ryan Grab, read. “Viacom and Bellator hold the safety and well-being of our staff in the highest regard and we’re currently reviewing the situation.”
