Just days after UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov said it would make more sense for him to fight Floyd Mayweather, current No. 1 contender Tony Ferguson issued a scathing response.
Taking to
Twitter, "El Cucuy" blasted Nurmogomedov for suggesting that a fight with undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather would do more for his legacy and bank account than defending his UFC lightweight belt against Ferguson.
Tried To Be Nice But You’re Still My B***h @TeamKhabib Check It Out... You Couldn’t Box Your Way Out Of A Paper Bag. I See You & The Team Working On That Footwork. Running From A Much Needed A** Whoopin’. Keep Swimmin’ Shrimp,The Fans Like Me Better 💯🕴I’m The Champ Chump
A Ferguson-Nurmagomedov fight has been in the cards for a while now, but something has always seemingly gotten in the way. The two were originally slated to meet at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale in December 2015, but a broken rib forced Nurmagomedov out. They were slated to meet again at UFC on FOX 19 in April 2016, but Ferguson had to pull out with a lung injury. They were again on track to meet in the Octagon at UFC 209 in March 2017, but Nurmagomedov pulled out of the bout on the day of the official weigh-in and had to be rushed to the hospital due to complications with his weight-cut.
Ferguson eventually became the interim UFC lightweight champion back in October 2017 when he defeated Kevin Lee via a triangle choke submission at UFC 216 and was once again supposed to fight Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. Unfortunately, Ferguson suffered a freak accident suffered on a TV set while promoting the fight and had to withdraw. Nurmagomedov went on to win the lightweight belt via unanimous decision over Al Iaquinta which he successfully defended against Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in October. Ferguson co-headlined the event with a fight against Anthony Pettis. He defeated Pettis in thrilling fashion, setting up yet another showdown with Nurmagomedov.
Exactly when the two will meet, however, remains to be seen. Nurmagomedov is currently awaiting his future fighting fate as he has a scheduled hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission on December 10 regarding the chaotic aftermath of his McGregor fight.
