Tyron Woodley successfully defended his welterweight belt against challenger Darren Till in the main event of UFC 228. Woodley submitted Till, who many viewed as the next rising star in the UFC and possibly the future of the welterweight division, early in the second round after a barrage of punches and elbows. Prior to the fight, Woodley claimed he was the best fighter in the world, though he entered as an underdog with bettors.
Woodley applied pressure early and seemed in control from the start. The first round didn’t result in much action, but it was in the second where the welterweight champ found an opening. Following a hard right hand that knocked Till to the ground, Woodley unloaded a flurry of thunderous punches and elbows. It looked like a stoppage was in order as Woodley opened up bloody cuts with his vicious onslaught, but Till managed to escape - which ultimately marked the beginning of the end for the 25-year-old Liverpool native. In his attempt to escape, Till left himself open for Woodley to setup the D’arce choke submission. With no other choice, Till tapped at 4:19 in the second round.
This was Woodley’s fourth consecutive title defense, the most among active fighters. Check out the highlights and post-fight interviews of Woodley vs Till at UFC 228.
