The UFC has added another big fight to UFC 229, which is already headlined by the much-anticipated lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.
Announced over the weekend, a lightweight bout between lightweights Tony Ferguson (23-3) and Anthony Pettis (21-7) will serve as a co-main event on the card.
Ferguson became the interim UFC lightweight champion back in October 2017 when he defeated Kevin Lee via a triangle choke submission at UFC 216. It extended his UFC win streak to 10.
However, Ferguson was stripped of the title in April when he was forced to withdraw from UFC 223 because of a freak accident suffered on a TV set while promoting his fight against Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov, of course, went on to win the lightweight belt via unanimous decision over Al Iaquinta which he will now defend against the returning McGregor. As for Ferguson, he is returning from his torn LCL.
His opponent, Anthony Pettis, is coming off a submission win over Michael Chiesa at UFC 226 in July.
UFC 229, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on October 6, is expected to be one of the highest-grossing events in MMA history. While most will be tuning in for the highly anticipated Nrumagomedov-McGregor showdown, the main card features several big fights, including Saint Preux-Reyes, Lewis-Volkov, and Waterson-Herrig.
