A fight two years in the making, fans were finally treated to Frankie Edgar versus Max Holloway at UFC 240. After two unsuccessful attempts dating back to 2017, the two finally met in the Octagon as the main event fight for the featherweight title. Both fighters clearly had tremendous respect for one another and it showed in their approach to the fight.
Round one was fairly uneventful as both seemed to be feeling each other out. Round two featured a little more action, but again, both fighters remained cautious in their attack. Neither seemingly wanted to take any big risks, especially Holloway who attacked with great precision, brilliantly picking and landing his shots. Edgar had some success with leg kicks, but that was about the only offense he could muster. Holloway made great use of his length, keeping Edgar at a distance with his jab. Edgar did attempt multiple takedowns, but Holloway successfully defended each. The second round ended with a powerful spinning kick from Holloway that connected with Edgar's body and sent him reeling into the fence.
With both fighters now more comfortable, the action really turned up in round three, especially the second half. Trading blows, Holloway connected with multiple powerful shots that at one point seemed to stun Edgar. Sensing an opening, Holloway went on the attack, but his aggressive approach led to a takedown scored for Edgar to close the round.
It was more or less the same in round for, though Edgar — perhaps sensing he was down in the fight — threw a lot more volume. None of the punches appeared to have much on them though. While Edgar may have thrown more punches, it seemed it was Holloway who connected with the more meaningful, damaging blows. This round also ended with a powerful spinning kick to the body of Edgar.
With a sense of urgency, Edgar continued his aggressive approach in the fifth and final round, attempting multiple takedowns that Holloway successfully fended against. Holloway may not have gone for an aggressive knockout, but his tactical attack — led by powerful, snap jabs — did more than enough damage. And more importantly, they allowed him to keep Edgar at bay and control the fight.
Both fighters show tremendous respect for each other post-fight. Holloway was asked which title he wanted to defend next and, riding a high from the win, seemed ready to fight anyone. Edgar, who has been seeking this fight for years, was understandably down on himself after the loss, but promised this wasn't the last we would see of him.
