Newly minted double champ Henry Cejudo has reportedly undergone left should surgery to repair his subscapularis muscle and will likely be out for the rest of the year.
Cejudo told ESPN that he suffered the injury in the first round of his bantamweight title fight against Marlon Moraes at UFC 238 earlier this month. The injury didn't stop him from winning the belt, however, as
he defeated Moraes via third-round TKO to become just the fourth fighter in UFC history to hold a title in two weight classes (flyweight and now bantamweight) at the same time.
Cejudo faces a lengthy recovery time as the subscapularis muscle "is the most used muscle in the shoulder and is part of the rotator cuff," according to ESPN. His doctors have asid he will ned abou four or five months before he is cleared to fully start training again, which means he will likely be out for the rest of the year.
The injury also means Dana White has some interesting decisions to make. Does the UFC book interim title fights in either the flyweight or bantamweight divisions? Additionally, Cejudo's quest to become a three-division champion —
eyeing a potential fight against Fankie Edgar for the featherweight belt — looks even more difficult to accomplish now with the injury. With all the time off, he'll almost certainly have to defend one of his current belts when he returns.
