Fighting for the first time since his "retirement" last year, Alexander Gustafsson returned to the UFC Octagon as a heavyweight. Facing submission specialist Fabrício Werdum at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, Gustafsson again found himself on the losing end of the contest.
Despite being noticeably heavier, Gustafsson looked every bit as quick and spry on his feet as he did in the light heavyweight division. And while he could probably go blow for blow with any heavyweight power, he was overmatched by Werdum on the canvas.
Around the two-minute mark of the first round, Werdum went all-in for a takedown attempt. Scrambling ensued and Gustaffson attempted to fend of the takedown with some heavy hammerfists. However, Werdum continued to work and eventually went after the arm of "The Mauler." Once he was able to free Gustaffson's clasp, he began to stretch out the arm. Sensing he was in danger, Gustaffson immediately tapped to avoid any serious damage to his arm.
The win moves the No. 14-ranked Werdum to 24-9-1. Gustafsson falls to 18-7 and has now lost three straight fights dating back to December 2018's title match against Jon Jones. Despite the short debut, it would be a shame to see Gustafsson hang up the gloves again as many still believe he has immense talent.
