It may have taken years for lightweight veterans Jim Miller and Clay Guida to meet in the Octagon, but it took just 58 seconds to determine the winner. Despite the short affair, the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 5 in Newark provided all of the excitement and fireworks fans wanted.
About 40 seconds into the first round, Guida connected with a powerful right hand that sent Miller stumbling backward. But Miller quickly recovered and countered with his own powerful left hand that, in turn, caused Guida to stumble backward. A wild miss from Miller saw Guida attempt a sloppy takedown which MIller turned into a guilltine choke.
With the choke locked in, Guida refused to tap and eventually went to sleep. Once again, Herb Dean was late to stop the fight, despite seeing Guida's hand go limp on multiple occasions.
It's possible that the criticism Herb Dean has recently faced for a string of early stoppages have led to some questionionable late stoppages this time around. In any case, it was an impressive performance for Miller, who earned his 20th career UFC victory.
