Coming off an impressive victory over Alexander Hernandez at UFC Brooklyn on Saturday night, UFC star Donald Cerrone immediately expressed interest in fighting Conor McGregor. It didn't take long for McGregor to respond, as the former double champ took to social media and seemingly accepted the challenge.
But talk is cheap and nothing has officially been confirmed. So can we expect to see "Cowboy" fight "The Notorious" somewhere down the road? UFC president Dana White seems open to the match-up, provided fans are interested.
“Yeah, I mean anything is possible,” White said. “If those guys want that and the fans want to see it, that’s what I do.”
White tempered excitement, warning fans not to get too excited as nothing is official yet. “Don’t run out there and say that’s the fight I’m making,” White added. “I don’t know what I’m gonna do, but I like the fact that two of these guys that are complete dogs and fight anybody — willing to fight anybody — want to fight each other. That’s fun.”
Cerrone looked mighty impressive in his return to lightweight on Saturday. The star maintains that he wants a top-five opponent and McGregor, who lost the lightweight belt to Khabib Nurmagomedov, certainly fits the bill. Of course, McGregor still has some issues to resolve, including a disciplinary case with the Nevada Athletic Commission which stemmed from his UFC 229 post-fight brawl with Nurmagomedov.
