Max Rohskopf’s UFC career has quickly come to an end.
Add the lightweight to the growing list of names released by the promotion recently. MMA Fighting confirmed that Max was released from his contract.
This comes after his short notice bout against Austin Hubbard at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Volkov where the 25-year-old requested to stop the bout several times before the third round. The controversy surrounding the match-up stemmed from his cornerman Robert Drysadale refusing to call the fight. Commission inspector Charvez Foger would stop the bout on Rohskopf’s behalf.
While Rohskopf defended his coaches actions and refusal to the call the fight, the UFC newcomer ultimately deciding to quit his bout may have been the driving force behind his release. Rohskopf explained to MMA Fighting why he wanted to give up following the second round:
“I’ve done this my whole life,” Rohskopf explained. “I’ve self-boycotted myself. Even when I was wrestling in high school, I was the best in the state and ended up getting third because I self-boycotted myself. I was one of the best guys in the country in college, was never an All-American when it counted, because I was telling myself that, for whatever reason, I don’t deserve it.
“That’s exactly what I did in my fight with Austin. Sh*t got hard, and I looked at my coach and said, ‘I don’t want to be here anymore.’ Not because I didn’t want to be there, but because I didn’t think I deserved to be there.”
Rohskopf exits the promotion with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. There’s no word on whether the lightweight intends to continue fighting outside of the UFC.
