UFC's welterweight division was thrown for a loop this weekend when Jorge Masvidal knocked out Darren Till at Fight Night 147 in London. Till was the heavy favorite entering the match, ranked third in the welterweight division. Following his upset victory, Masvidal made his case that he should be next in line to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight belt. And apparently, Kamaru Usman and his team agree.
ESPN's Brett Okamoto spoke with Usman's manager Ali Abdelaziz. Impressed by Masvidal's performance, they believe he deserves the next title shot, not Colby Covington.
While Masvidal's performance on Saturday was indeed impressive, it's unlikely that he'll be Usman's next challenger. For starters, UFC president Dana White
essentially already confirmed that Colby Covington is next in line to fight for the belt. Covington has long felt he deserved a shot at the welterweight belt and
made that quite public prior to UFC 235. He also has a
long, ugly history with Usman's manager Ali Abdelaziz.
Secondly, as Ben Askren even pointed out in the post-fight show and on social media, this was Masvidal's first win since January 2017. Prior to Saturday's upset, Masvidal had lost two straight - Demian Maia in May 2017, and Stephen Thompson in November 2017. He had not fought since then.
Who do you think should fight Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title next?
