Once again, New Japan Pro-Wrestling is forced to cancel a big event.
The Japanese promotion confirmed that their upcoming Best of The Super Juniors Tournament has been scrapped due to the coronavirus. The annual competition was set to begin on May 12 until June 6, with the overall winner receiving a title shot for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at Dominion.
Thus far, New Japan has been forced to axe their Road To Wrestling Dontaku tour, the entire New Japan Cup tournament, Sakura Genesis, and their Anniversary show featuring a match between IWGP Heavyweight & Intercontinental Champion Tetsuya Naito and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi.
There’s still no word on when the company could be up and running shows again. Officials aren’t big on holding empty arena shows like All Elite Wrestling, WWE, and Impact Wrestling, thus New Japan is holding out hope that they can start running live events with fans soon.
Luckily, the 2020 G1 Climax Tournament has been rescheduled to start in the October this year due to the Olympics, though the Olympics event has been postponed to July 2021. The next big show for New Japan is the Wrestle Dynasty show in Madison Square Garden on August 6; however, the coronavirus situation is still murky, thus the event could end up being cancelled.
