New Japan Pro Wrestling has finally confirmed the date for the 2020 G1 Climax tournament, as the annual competition will begin on September 19 in Osaka. The final nights of the tournament will take place on October 16, 17, and 18. The G1 Climax was moved to the fall this year due to the 2020 Summer Olympics taking place in Tokyo.
There’s no word on how many men will take place within the tournament this year. Last year’s competition, which featured 2019 winner Kota Ibushi, Jon Moxley, Lance Archer, KENTA, Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada, and Shingo Takagi, had 20 men vying for the opportunity to receive a title shot in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 14.
As always, the IWGP Heavyweight Champion has a guaranteed spot within the annual competition. As in previous years, the G1 Climax is a round robin style tournament that sees competitors within their respective blocks fighting to make it to the finals. The winners of Block A and B will meet in the finals, and the man that emerges victorious will get the opportunity to challenge any champion of their choosing in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 15.
