Io Shirai Retains The NXT Women's Title At THE GREAT AMERICAN BASH With Some Help From Asuka

Io Shirai retained the NXT Women's Championship after an exciting back-and-forth encounter with one of half of the WWE Women's Tag-Team Champions, Sasha Banks, last night at The Great American Bash.

The match was as solid as you'd expect with both of these Superstars involved, but the constant presence of Bayley on the outside was a sure sign that shenanigans were never far away. The Boss's tag-team partner attempted to interfere on a number of occasions, and almost cost Shirai the match and the title when Sasha was able to capitalize by locking on the Banks Statement in the middle of the ring.

However, The Genius of the Sky found some unexpected backup when Raw Women's Champion Asuka made her way to the ring to even the odds. The Empress of Tomorrow spit green mist in Banks' face, allowing Shirai to climb to the top rope and hit her signature moonsalt for the pinfall victory.

Io will now defend her title against Tegan Nox at a future event, while Banks will get chance at revenge when she faces Asuka for the Raw Women's Championship at Extreme Rules.
