Raquel Gonzalez is the new NXT Women's Champion after defeating Io Shirai in the main event of TakeOver: Stand and Deliver, Night 1.

Despite Gonzalez's size and strength advantage, the relatively inexperienced powerhouse went into this match as the underdog. Shirai has held the title for over a year, managing to fend off challenges from the likes of Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair.

She very nearly added Gonzalez to the list, but in the end, the Mexican America's brute force was simply too much for the Genius of the Sky to overcome.

After a terrific (if a little short) back-and-forth match, Shirai actually hit her Over The Moonsalt (and didn't even overshoot this time) for a near fall, but Raquel recovered and planted her opponent with a devastating one-armed chokeslam on the outside, followed by another in the ring to score the pinfall victory.

Does this mean Shirai will soon be heading to the main roster? Possibly, but we reckon she'll stick around on the black and gold brand for a while longer - even if it's just until she gets the opportunity to regain the title in a rematch.
