Last night's episode of NXT was the show's first on The CW network and, while we got a new logo for the developmental brand, this new era didn't kick off with a new NXT Women's Champion.
Triple H and Shawn Michaels opened the show by revealing a new championship belt and we'd expected the night to end with that around the waist of Japanese superstar Giulia.
Her match with current NXT Women's Champion Roxanne Perez began with a lot of back-and-forth action, though Perez gained the upper hand with the Pop Rox. Giulia rolled out of the ring before she could be pinned and regained the advantage at ringside.
However, before the match continued, Perez grabbed the title from ringside to distract the referee, prompting a hooded figure to take Giulia out, giving the champion an opportunity to hit a second Pop Rox for the 1-2-3.
Cora Jade, who has been sidelined since January with a torn ACL, then revealed her face and will seemingly fight alongside Perez - who recently turned heel - moving forward.
It's not the worst thing in the world to keep Giulia on the hunt for Perez's title and there's already an expectation that she'll be on the main roster sooner rather than later.
Despite turning on CM Punk on television, Perez has had nothing but good things to say about the Best in the World.
"It’s meant so much to me, especially because I grew up idolizing him," she said of getting to learn from him in NXT. "Now that I get to be under his learning tree, it’s really cool. He’s so awesome."
"He stops by our NXT pay-per-views, watches every match from start to finish, and gives us feedback and advice. It’s something he doesn’t have to do, and I think that’s really cool."
