On Sunday night at Slammiversary XVII, Sami Callihan defeated Tessa Blanchard in the main event of the big summer pay-per-view. Despite a very strong showing from the former Impact Knockouts Champion against “The Draw”, many were stunned that Blanchard didn’t get the win over Callihan.
According to the
Wrestling Observer Radio, the plan was always set to have the Ohio vs. Everything leader win, as the bout was just a showcase for the third-generation wrestler.
The decision was reportedly made to have Callihan go over as officials were concerned that Tessa Blanchard would garner “Roman Reigns-like heat” if the company had her defeat him. Meltzer said that the promotion is fearful of the fan backlash if they push Tessa Blanchard too hard.
There’s no word on where Blanchard goes from here. Callihan showed a sign of respect to Blanchard following their bout, thus signaling the end of their rivalry.
