Sting's run in WWE was a brief one. He battled Triple H at WrestleMania, but his in-ring career was brought to an abrupt end after suffering an injury during a match with Seth Rollins.
Now, though, he's part of All Elite Wrestling and is working a reduced schedule that's clearly meant to protect him at this later stage in his career (while still ensuring he looks like a badass). During a recent interview with Paste Magazine, Sting was asked why he never faced The Undertaker and shared his thoughts on why that match wasn't a priority when he finally signed with WWE.
"To this day, I honestly don’t know. I don’t even know, it could be Taker. Maybe Taker just never really wanted to work with me. Maybe they brought it up and he kind of snubbed his nose and said he didn’t really want to do that," the WWE Hall of Famer pondered. "For whatever reason, even though Taker and I have always gotten along great. I don’t think he has issues with me, I certainly don’t have any issues with him. I just have a great amount of respect for him."
"I have no idea why that match never happened. I think it was not right that it didn’t happen. It’s something that I believe should have happened. I said it for 20 years, I made it clear, you know, 'I’d love to have that match, I’d love to have one with that guy.' With the two characters, I had so many ideas of how we could’ve done that, and made it definitely a night that nobody would ever forget."
The Undertaker has gone on record to say he doesn't think he could have had a good match with Sting given his failing health later in his career, and based on how things played out with Goldberg...well, he's absolutely right. It just wasn't meant to be, but we'd have loved to see it take place in their prime.
Do you think it was a mistake not having The Undertaker vs. Sting happen in WWE?
