This past Monday's episode of Raw kicked off with a segment involving Jeff Hardy being arrested (wrongfully) for a DUI. Although there were hints that WWE was going to go down this route when Sheamus mentioned Jeff's battles with drugs and alcohol a couple of weeks ago, the angle still came in for a lot of criticism.
CM Punk was a guest on WWE Backstage last night, and when he was asked about the current storyline dragging up The Charismatic Enigma's history of substance problems, he revealed that he wasn't a fan.
"I’m speaking from experience because I worked extensively with Jeff. He, at that point, was not at a great place mentally and physically. My thing with this story is that somebody’s sobriety is very fragile and important. We talk about how Jeff is okay with it and he greenlit. To me, it is the responsibility to get in front of that, whether it be the company or a writer, and be like ‘no, we ‘re not doing that.’ Cleaning your life up and getting sober, we can champion that in many ways. You don’t put him in front of a moving car.”
Punk feuded with Jeff for the World Heavyweight Championship back in 2009, just before Hardy left the company. Rumor has it he was struggling to get clean, and Impact Wrestling (then TNA) didn't seem to have much of a problem with that.
What did you guys make of this segment? Do you agree with Punk, or do you think these kinds of things are fair game if the wrestler in question signs off on them?
