Cody Rhodes shocked the world when he decided to leave AEW and sign with WWE. The American Nightmare was one of the company's founders and an EVP, so his deciding that the grass would be greener working for Vince McMahon was a game-changing moment in this latest wrestling "war."
Since arriving in WWE at WrestleMania last year, Rhodes has, and continues to be, treated like one of the company's top Superstars. For those in AEW, that's an indication they'll get similar treatment (Jade Cargill and CM Punk lend plenty of weight to that argument as well).
It's no secret that Rhodes is close with current AEW World Champion MJF, while we know he was the one who brought the then-rookie into the promotion. Now, though, he's shared his belief that MJF will eventually choose to follow him to WWE!
"I think one day you will see MJF in WWE," Rhodes said on The Michael Kay Show. "I think, one thing I'm really proud of him for is, for those who don't know, MJF was one of my recruits. Probably the one I'm the most excited about just because [of] his potential, his personality; his overall professionalism is beaming. One thing I'm proud of him doing is, if you notice he's put on a lot of muscle and he's put it on safely over the last year and a half."
"And when he does make that jump, and I don't know when that is, if he makes the jump. But if he comes to WWE he'll have to stand across from guys like Drew McIntyre, you have to stand across from guys like Omos. Or, gosh, Brock Lesnar."
"And, again, I'm not shaming anyone who's not hitting the gym and slangin' and bangin' with the weights like The Rock would say but it is part of what we do now," the American Nightmare added. "You gotta be able to swing the bat with the big boys. Watching him grow physically, it seems like maybe he knows where his future lies. But really, your guess is as good as mine. I never bother him about it because I just want to remain the friends we have become today."
There's been a great deal of chatter surrounding MJF's contract status over the past year or so, though we recently learned he's likely signed a contract extension with AEW. It's a little hard to understand why he'd do so when AEW's product is on the decline, but if Tony Khan threw enough money at him, that could explain it.
