WWE has announced that it's come to terms on the release of Cutis Axel.
The former Intercontinental and Tag-Team Champion joins a huge batch of Superstars and employees who were recently let go as part of a cost-saving measure by the company. Axel hadn't been utilized on television in quite some time, so this news isn't particularly surprising.
The son of Mr. Perfect/Curt Hennig signed with WWE in 2007 under the name Michael McGillicutty, and was a member of the original Nexus faction before being sent back down to developmental. He did receive a brief push when he re-debuted on Raw as Curis Axel under the tutelage of Paul Heyman and had a short IC title reign, but soon found himself lost in the shuffle.
Axel then got a taste of tag-team gold with Bo Dallas as part of the B-Team, but their popularity waned after creative leaned too heavily into the buffoonish comedy gimmick, and he was back to square one.
Axel is a talented wrestler (even if he did always seem a bit lost on the mic), so let's hope he finds more success on the independent scene, or maybe even in AEW.
