It seems WWE's plan is for the relationship between Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman to be vastly different to the one the latter had with Brock Lesnar. In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer explained the company's approach to the storyline.
Apparently, seeing as everyone knew Heyman and Lesnar were friends, WWE now wants people to realise that there is no friendship when it comes to The Big Dog and his new manager.
The idea now is for Reigns to be the one in charge of their business relationship, and that without the Universal Champion, Heyman would have no role to play in WWE. In other words, Reigns has saved his career, and without The Beast around, Heyman is supposed to be indebted to his new client.
Heyman has made it clear during promos that he's "Special Counsel to the Tribal Chief" and not an "Advocate," and all of this is meant to put Reigns over as an edgier personality now that he's a heel. So far, it's working, and SmackDown's ratings have definitely improved.
