At Hell in a Cell, Randy Orton finally managed to dethrone Drew McIntyre to become a 14-time WWE Champion. It was a move expected by many fans, and one that signals a reliance from the company on stars from the past (rather those they can build for the future).
Now, it's been noted by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Live that the plan is for The Viper to defend his newly won title against WWE Hall of Famer Edge at WrestleMania next year. "I certainly was given the impression tonight that Orton and Edge is the direction right now for that championship," he explained.
It's unclear what this means for those recent claims that McIntyre is supposed to face Roman Reigns at Survivor Series, but Edge eventually being crowned WWE Champion does make sense for his run. However, it also means we'll have another part-time champion...and one who isn't exactly a young up-and-comer.
That's the way WWE is approaching things these days, though, hence why Paul Heyman's time as Executive Director on RAW didn't last. He wanted to build new stars, but WWE seems intent on following in WCW's footsteps as ratings continue to decline.
What do you guys make of this news?
