Last month, Drew McIntyre talked about his interest in facing John Cena in a big money match, with 2023's WrestleMania - which is set to take place in Los Angeles, California - being a dream scenario.
The two men have clashed in the past, including since McIntyre returned to WWE, but it seems the former WWE Champion is keen to now square off with Cena on the Grandest Stage of Them All. However, the Leader of the Cenation has a very different take on the possibility of a "dream match" like this one.
"Well, I always appreciate being involved in a conversation of saying that things are important because that means people haven’t forgotten what you’ve put forth as an effort," Cena responded when he was asked about the match during a recent interview to promote F9: The Fast Saga.
"But man, what a way to set yourself up for disappointment. In no way, shape, or form is Drew in a position to make matches or make things happen, and I’m not either."
"Neither of us have that power. That’s beyond our capacity. I certainly am grateful for being mentioned, which is awesome. I’ve got more matches in WWE, I’m not done, but I’ve never approached anything like, ‘I’d like to work with this person. I wanna have a match with this person,’ because I don’t make those choices. They say, ‘Hey, I’d like you to do this.’ ‘Alright, it’s time to go to work.’"
"That’s really allowed me to enjoy every step of the way. I think if we build expectations in our head, I hate to say this to Drew, but if that never happens, how is he supposed to feel about that?"
This is certainly an unexpected attitude, and it seems Cena simply isn't on board with Superstars naming him as a dream opponent at this stage in his career. Right now, the signs are pointing to the wrestler turned movie star squaring off with Universal Champion Roman Reigns when he returns to WWE later this month, and that's likely to be a one-off given how busy he is in Hollywood now.
