Earlier this week, comedian Kenice Mobley revealed in a podcast interview that she had been hired by WWE as a writer despite making it clear to them she had zero knowledge of wrestling. It sounds like the company was hoping she might inject some humour into RAW, but her comments quickly went viral and there was one thing, in particular, fans really took issue with.
"The people I know that are on it are Bobby...his name is either Bobby Ashley or Bobby Lashley and I really should know that." Yes, she really should know that, and we're sure you won't be surprised to learn that Mobley has now been released by WWE.
There are conflicting reports doing the rounds about what led to this, but her going public and making the company look bad (which is 100% their own fault) seems to be the main reason.
"This turned into a fairly big thing, heavily talked about on social media but also noted among those on the inside," Dave Meltzer explains in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter. "Mobley was also under the gun for speaking publicly on subjects that WWE doesn’t want stuff talked about."
"One person very close to the situation noted the negative reaction to this and said that she is not the only one in this situation, and actually this is typical of many of the writers. But where they were embarrassed by this is that by going public, it makes WWE to the outside world look 'blindingly stupid.'"
Needless to say, it's never nice when someone loses their job, but this is probably for the best. However, it ultimately speaks to larger issues within WWE and a writing team of people with this lack of knowledge obviously explains the decline in quality of the product in recent years.
