Pro wrestling is the only "sport" to have continued despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and WWE has lost big stars like Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens after they refused to compete, released dozens of others to save money, and seen a large number of employees come down with the virus in recent weeks.
Despite that, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon wants to bring fans back to shows, and Dave Meltzer has shed some light on his hopes in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Apparently, WWE contacted a company for local people for TV tapings which would take place on a Friday and Monday in late July. These would reportedly take place at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, Florida, which seats 8,000, on Friday, July 24, and Monday, July 27. The original plan was to announce these shows this week because McMahon wants to be the first person to hold a live indoor "sports" event with fans in attendance.
There would be social distancing measures and a limited number of fans in attendance, but with COVID-19 tearing its way through the company's employees and things in Orlando looking bleak, it seems these plans have been put on hold for the time being.
As always, we'll keep you updated.
