As is so often the case on social media, a slow news weekend in the wrestling world saw something from the past come back to haunt a big name. In this case, it was WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella after a clip from E! Network’s Fashion Police in July 2013 started doing the rounds again.
On the show to promote Total Divas, The Bella Twins (Nikki and Brie) were handed a photo of WWE legend Chyna to offer their take. It was at this point Nikki said, "we don’t know if it’s a man or a woman," and comedian Joan Rivers would follow that by making a cruel joke at Chyna's expense.
While a joke is just a joke, this came at a particularly bad time in Chyna's life, and Nikki has issued an apology.
"I want to sincerely apologize for a comment I made over 8 years ago on Fashion Police," she says in the Tweet below. "I am sorry and embarrassed by my 29-year-old self, who offended Chyna and in turn, hurt her family and others. I wish I could take it back. Please learn from me, it’s not worth hurting someone’s feelings for a meaningless laugh."
"Chyna will always be remembered as an icon and pioneer who helped create the opportunities for women in wrestling that exist today. Thank you Chyna! – Nikki Bella."
What Nikki did isn't exactly the worst crime, but it's not overly surprising that one of the women who many feel held WWE's women's division back - only to later take credit for the Women's Revolution - had such little respect for this pioneer from the company's Attitude Era.
