Last night's episode of RAW introduced fans to a bizarre new segment dubbed "Underground." The concept is that "legit" MMA-style fights are taking place backstage between wrestlers, with no ring, ropes, or posts, and girls dancing inside of a warehouse.
Clearly meant to combat RAW's falling ratings, most fans ridiculed the concept, so it's obviously going to be interesting to see whether this makes any sort of impact in terms or viewership this week and next. It's clearly something WWE struggled with, though, as Fightful Select's Sean Ross Sapp reports that, as of midnight EST, WWE was still filming content for "Underground."
Other hosts besides Shane McMahon were reportedly suggested, but Vince likely believes his son - another "big name" from the past - is a draw.
It's hard to say who will benefit from this new element of RAW's third hour, and there's obviously nothing to say it will last. After all, the last time WWE made changes to that part of the show, the 24/7 Championship was introduced (which quickly became a comedy gimmick) and WWE dimmed the lights and promised more violent content. Two weeks later, that was gone.
We'll be sure to keep you guys updated, but let us know your thoughts on "Underground" below!
