Since announcing her departure from WWE, Renee Young has been making the rounds to discuss her decision and what comes next. We've already learned that she felt like it was time for a change and that the cancellation of WWE Backstage was something of a wake-up call for her.
There have also been indications that she was unhappy about their response to her going public with her COVID-19 diagnosis. During an interview with Sports Media, Young revealed that she actually tried to leave WWE a number of years ago, but they turned down her asking to be released from the company.
"When I had actually thought about leaving WWE several years ago and I was not granted my release at the time because I was under a talent contract but they wouldn’t let me out of that contract, and it turned out to be a good thing," she recalls. "I got to do a ton of stuff beyond that-that I wouldn’t have the career that I have today had I not been there for the past three years. But as I sort of accepted that I’m like, ‘Okay, I am gonna be here for longer."
"What are these other opportunities and these other things that I’m gonna get to do here?" Young continued. "I’ve also accumulated this knowledge of wrestling that I’m not gonna be able to use anywhere else so, to just throw that away seems like a waste of the past almost decade, you know?"
It's certainly interesting to think about what might have been had Young left WWE sooner, and while she doesn't specifically mention when she tried to go, it's hard not to wonder if it might have coincided with her husband Dean Ambrose/Jon Moxley's decision to depart the company.
We'll keep you guys updated with what happens next.
