Rey Mysterio battling his son Dominik in a match for WWE seems like a given in some ways, and there were rumours that was once the plan (with it possibly serving as Rey's retirement match as he passes the mask on to his son). Well, they're the current SmackDown Tag Team Champions, and there have been no indications this is something the company still has planned.
During a recent interview with Metro, Rey explained why this potential dream match isn't happening.
"We actually talked about this a while back, when my son started to train," he admitted. "The more and more we got to spend time together in the ring and outside of the ring, it came to the point where me and my son were like, ‘there’s no need.’ The connection here is so beautiful, the love – more than father and son, I think we’re like best friends. For the moment, there’s no time for us to even be thinking, ‘How would it be like to face each other?'"
Dominik has been taken out by Universal Champion Roman Reigns, while Rey also took a brutal beating from him inside Hell in a Cell during last Friday's episode of SmackDown.
That's led to a lot of speculation they could be forced to relinquish their titles, but Rey was quick to point out that the idea of him and Dominik squaring off in a singles match isn't likely.
"We’re enjoying such a great moment right now within our personal lives, within our wrestling careers," the future WWE Hall of Famer was quick to stress. "For me, it’s a complete blessing, before I end up retiring – to have been able to share these moments with my son. So that thought of possibly facing each other, I think was thrown down the trash a while back."
It could still happen, but for now, it's clear WWE has moved on from the idea. Rey has plenty of gas left in the tank, anyway, and it might be better to save this match for when he's ready to hang us his mask.
