The Undertaker has finally commented on the Montreal Screwjob, revealing what his reaction was to the controversial finish to the Survivor Series main event in 1997 which saw Vince McMahon screw Bret Hart out of the WWE Championship when he faced Shawn Michaels.
Hart was leaving for WWE the next night, and terrified he would take the title to WCW, McMahon took some drastic measures which didn't set well with a lot of wrestlers at the time.
The Undertaker recently appeared on The Bill Simmons podcast, and shared his thoughts on what went down. "I was pissed about the whole thing because I felt like I possibly could’ve been used to get what we needed. Take Shawn out of this, let me do it. Then I’ll do business on the other side. I think Bret probably would’ve went for that."
The Phenom went on to say that Vince did what he thought was best, but he was personally so angry about the situation that he knew he would explode if they came face to face the next night. Looking back, he now sees where both sides were coming from, but when he did meet with the WWE Chairman, he said, "If this kind of s–t happens again you’ve got to involve me here because it doesn’t have to go down like this. He agreed. I guess it all worked out. It was sad."
Like most fans, though, The Undertaker agrees "That’s one of the great wrestling stories of that era and that decade, the Montreal Screwjob."
