WWE promised that "we'd never see it coming" at SummerSlam, and it's fair to say that Roman Reigns' return to the company was definitely a surprise. After The Fiend defeated Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship, The Big Dog showed up to take them both down, and it was confirmed during last night's RAW that the three men will clash for the title during Sunday's Payback.
Now, WrestlingNews.co has shed some light on future plans for Reigns in WWE, explaining that his return was kept a secret from almost everyone (including the company's creative team).
The site explains that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon wants Reigns to have an "edge" to him moving forward, and what's happening now is what WWE originally had planned for WrestleMania 36 and beyond. There, Reigns was supposed to face - and defeat - Goldberg for the Universal Championship, but he went home due to concerns over COVID-19.
It seems as if WWE is going to have Reigns take the title from The Fiend as soon as Payback, likely in the hope that will increase the company's ratings. It's certainly feasible that it will, but fans of The Fiend are unlikely to be happy with him being buried again...unless Strowman takes the loss, of course.
