Original plans called for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to face WWE Champion Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, with Cody Rhodes then pivoting to challenge World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.
The American Nightmare giving the Brahma Bull his blessing did nothing to help fans accept the bout and #WeWantCody trended online for days. Fans, meanwhile. turned on The Rock and the YouTube video of the SmackDown segment became the most disliked upload in WWE history.
Johnson turned heel at the WrestleMania Kickoff and Rhodes vs. Reigns II was confirmed for the Show of Shows this April.
However, it's apparent that more twists and turns are on the way, and the first trailer for WrestleMania XL appears to be teasing either Rhodes and Rollins vs. Reigns and The Rock or two singles matches (meaning Johnson would challenge for Rollins' title).
Either option makes sense, particularly after recent comments Seth has made about the returning WWE Superstar and Hollywood A-Lister.
"It's just what happens when powerful people exert their power," he said of The Rock's actions at the Kickoff in Las Vegas. "They just think they do whatever they want and get away with it and that sucks. It just sucks. I don’t know any other way to put it. I guess it [resulted] in Cody getting what he wanted. We’ll figure out what’s next for the World Heavyweight title. But Cody said it best. It’s bulls**t. It feels pretty gross to me."
Rollins also commented on The Rock doing this to his nemesis, CM Punk, back in 2013. "Ten years or something like that. The last time he came around, I don’t like Punk but he did the same thing to Punk, kinda came in and took his main event and did it two years in a row with some very not-so-memorable matches with John Cena."
"But yeah, now coming back, on the board of directors, like I said man, it feels like gross. I don’t like it," he adds. "I feel like we gotta do something about it. Just don’t know what that next step is going to be."
If this tag team match happens, it means all four of these men will likely be pulling double duty at the PLE, likely main eventing both nights (which would be a first for WWE).
