WWE Hall Of Famer And Actor George 'The Animal' Steel Passes Away Aged 79
Following the tragic news of Nicole Bass's death from last night, we have another bleak announcement to share with you guys, as the legendary George 'The Animal' Steel has passed away at the age of 79...
We're very sad to report that James Myers, better known as George 'The Animal' Steele, has passed away. After word broke on social media, WWE confirmed the news with a statement.
Steele will surely be familiar to fans of a certain age that grew up during the Hulk Hogan era, but his career actually began long before that in the late '60s, when he became involved in pro-wrestling to supplement his income as a school teacher. Despite his unhinged, neanderthal-like character, Steele was actually a highly educated man, earning his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State and eventually his master’s degree from Central Michigan University. Steele also dabbled in acting, and fans of Tim Burton's Ed Wood should recognize him for his performance as fellow
grappler, Tor Johnson.
A heel for most of his career, 'The Animal' became a fan-favorite in the mid '80s and went on to engage in memorable feuds with Randy 'Macho Man' Savage over the affections of Miss Elizabeth.
On a personal note, one of my earliest memories of being a wrestling fan is sitting in awe as Steele tore apart turnbuckle pads with his teeth, and displayed his green tongue to the horror of his opponents.
Our thoughts go out to Mr. Myers' family and friends at this time.
