During this Friday's episode of SmackDown in Toronto, WWE Hall of Famer Edge celebrated the 25th anniversary of his career.
In the main event, the Rated R Superstar squared off with Sheamus and emerged victorious after hitting the Celtic Warrior with two Spears. Once the show had gone off the air, however, Edge seemingly announced his retirement by telling fans that "this is my last time in front of y'all."
There was already speculation that he might be planning to make the leap to AEW as that would open the door to the former WWE Champion reuniting with tag team partner Christian for one final run.
In a radio interview which took place prior to SmackDown, Edge shared an update on where things stand with his contract and it appears claims he's no longer signed with WWE were incorrect.
"That's why I really want to collect myself after this thing, take a big ol' deep breath and decide what that is," he said when asked about his in-ring future. "My contract is up at the end of September. This is my last contracted match. I have a lot of decisions to make."
This 100% closes the door on Edge making any sort of surprise appearance AEW All In later this month, though that was always unlikely.
Since his miraculous return from a career-ending injury, WWE hasn't really done the former WWE Champion justice; the pandemic did little to help matters, of course, but he's never won a title and rarely been in the main event scene. Edge did, however, headline WrestleMania, albeit in a losing effort against Roman Reigns.
A low point came when he formed The Judgement Day, with what felt like a never-ending feud ensuing once he'd been kicked out of the group. There have been plenty of high points, though, and we know a match with Sheamus was something Edge was keen on.
Whether he'll decide to remain with WWE or head elsewhere with likely come down to cash and creative...
