At this year's WrestleMania, John Cena challenged Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The match main evented Night 2 of the Show of Shows in Las Vegas, but was widely deemed a disappointment by fans.
In the closing moments of the bout, an assist from rapper Travis Scott (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was a surprise no-show, despite being part of Cena's heel turn) ensured the Leader of the Cenation became a 17-time WWE Champion.
There was some solid storytelling in the match, as the American Nightmare's hesitance to hit Cena with the title gave his opponent the opportunity to low blow him and use the championship as a weapon.
At Night of Champions, Rhodes defeated Randy Orton to become the King of the Ring. With that, he earned a shot at Cena at next month's SummerSlam, and redemption is at the forefront of his mind.
During a recent interview with Busted Open, Rhodes addressed the criticism surrounding his and Cena's WrestleMania match and promised a more satisfying conclusion to their rematch.
"SummerSlam, I don’t wanna go as far as making any promises, but I can tell you the goal with SummerSlam is if people felt a certain way about WrestleMania, I will put that all on my back and take all the credit and responsibility for perhaps not feeling satisfied," Rhodes said. "I’d like to get ‘em to the finish line with SummerSlam. Very much looking forward to doing this dance again."
We'll see what happens, but we'd bet WWE took the complaints on board and have something special planned for this one.
Remember, Cena only has 15 dates left, so it seems likely he'll drop the title to Rhodes before taking a short break and (hopefully) returning as a babyface.
SummerSlam takes place in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on August 2 and August 3.
