WWE has been receiving a great deal of criticism for their decision to now continue doing weekly live shows instead of taping RAW, SmackDown, and NXT in advance as previously reported. It's a move that's receiving a great deal of mainstream media attention, including through ESPN.
As a result, WWE has been forced to issue a statement regarding their decision:
"We believe it is now more important than ever to provide people with a diversion from these hard times," the company says. "We are producing content on a closed set with only essential personnel in attendance following appropriate guidelines while taking additional precautions to ensure the health and wellness of our performers and staff. As a brand that has been woven into the fabric of society, WWE and its Superstars bring families together and deliver a sense of hope, determination and perseverance."
It's hard to know what to make of that, especially as it really doesn't feel like they're taking the health of their employees into account. They're clearly taking some precautions, but it's hard to escape the feeling they're more worried about what will happen to ratings if they're forced to remain off television for an extended period of time.
It's possible Orlando officials could step in soon (that's why upcoming UFC shows have been cancelled) but, for now, WWE will remain on the air.
