Tay Conti was recently a guest on the AEW Unrestricted podcast with Aubrey Edwards and Tony Schiavone, and she opened up on the battle to get her release from WWE.
Explaining that she had been asking to be let go for a couple of months, the All Elite Wrestling star revealed that she was unhappy in the company because they weren't using her. "I remember they told me, ‘No, you’re not gonna go to AEW. We put a lot of money on you. You are a star blah, blah, blah.’ I’m like, ‘Yes, you guys don’t use me here. So I gotta go somewhere, but it’s not there. I know nobody there. I have no plans to go to AEW.’"
Unfortunately, with two more years on her contract, it appeared Conti was trapped, and WWE even offered to pay her to sit at home for the remainder of that. However, that wasn't an option because she knew that people would forget her and, most importantly, she couldn't do what she loves in the squared circle: wrestle (taking that from talent is a recurring issue with WWE).
"We decided to keep working, and everything was good," Conti continued. "Out of nowhere, they called me because...I mean, not out of nowhere. Everybody knew was what was going on because of COVID, but I was not expecting the call since we were okay. They told me ‘We are finally letting you go’ not in a really good, I don’t how to explain it without being too mean, they’re not too nice."
If that was Mark Carrano calling, we're not surprised, but it ultimately worked out well for Conti and she's been able to make a name for herself in AEW.
