Well, so much for a fight between Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar.
Back in August, the former UFC Lightweight Champion listed off several fighters that he would like to face in the octagon and named Frankie Edgar as one of the potential candidates.
Edgar didn’t hesitate to accept the fight against the former two-division champ and both men called on the UFC President to make the bout happen. White has confirmed that McGregor will make his return to the octagon in 2020; however, it will not be against Frankie Edgar:
“I said it leading into the Mayweather fight, ‘he may never fight again after this fight when you make this kind of money,” White said to the Boston Herald. “He’s fought once since then. Conor loves to fight and wants to fight again, but the Frankie Edgar fight isn’t going to happen.”
White highlights the weight class difference between Edgar and McGregor, stating that the fight just doesn’t make any sense to him, “Edgar is two weight classes below him,” White said. “[Edgar] was supposed to fight Aljamain Sterling. Aljamain fell out and got hurt. Frankie is coming to the end of his career, and he could end up getting himself into a title position again. To take the Conor fight makes no sense.”
There continues to be speculation that McGregor’s return match could be against Tony Ferguson; however, the fight has yet to be confirmed.
