Daniel Cormier actually thinks Jon Jones should be on the White House card.
The rivalry between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones is no secret. Both men absolutely despise one another, though the former has always been truthful when it comes to Jones’ athletic ability and talent.
Cormier is fresh off giving his reasoning why Jones isn’t in the conversation of one of the best fighters in the UFC. As you can imagine, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion wasn’t happy about his statement. But Cormier didn’t back down from his comments.
However, Cormier’s latest comments are a headscratcher. The former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion is actually lobbying for White to put Jones on the White House card. Apparently UFC is thin on winning Americans, so White should put Jones on the card.
“Imagine if we’re on the White House lawn and the Americans aren’t winning fights,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “And that could happen. When the opening line for McGregor vs. Chandler comes out, Chandler is going to be a pretty substantial underdog, as he should be. Even though Conor hasn’t fought forever, he’ll still be the favorite to beat Michael Chandler.
But if you put Jon Jones against Tom Aspinall for what everybody says, that Tom Aspinall is the guy to beat him, when that line opens, I bet Jon Jones is still going to be the favorite. He’ll be the favorite to beat Tom Aspinall. He’ll be the guy who’s the world champion, or at least was the world champion before he vacated his title and retired. He’ll still be the favorite to win that fight. I think you’ve got to let him fight.”
Cormier seems to be ignoring a huge factor on why Dana refuses to put Jones on the White House card - he’s not reliable. Jones had a chance to fight Tom Aspinall for the past two years and he officially blew off the fight by retiring. He left the hole in a division that was been slowed down because of Jones' lack of interest in fighting Tom.
It’s understandable why White doesn’t trust Jones at the moment. But Cormier has come up with a solution if Jones backs out of the fight again, just charge him a $1 million.
“I think you put some things in his contract that makes it very costly to not follow through,” Cormier suggested. “If you put Jon Jones on the White House card, say something that happens in the law, and he has to be pulled from the card? $1 million. Say he just says he doesn’t want to fight? $1 million.”
Dana has stated that he won’t even start thinking about the White House card until February. Dana can always change his tune about Jones from now until February, but it also wouldn’t be surprising if he sticks to his guns.
