So Conor McGregor is not running for President afterall.
Back in March, the former UFC Lightweight Champion confirmed himself that he’ll be running for Presidency in Ireland. That officially put the nail in the coffin for McGregor’s UFC return. But the 37-year-old has been talking about fighting at the upcoming White House special lately. In fact, McGregor was confident that he would be fighting at the upcoming White House show.
“That’s a definitely, that’s for sure,” he said in a video shot by street journalist Adam Glyn. “That’s my event.
I’m ecstatic that Mac is back, and what better event than to grace the White House Lawn for a straightener. What I do best. I’m very, very excited, very eager, very motivated. Bring it on, baby,” McGregor said.
Now Dana White hasn’t confirmed that he’s in talks with Conor about this, though Conor did post in July that was back in the USADA testing pool so his claims of returning may not be too far fetched. However, that did confirm that his focus was no longer running for Presidency.
“Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race,” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one at this moment in time. While I will not contest this election, my commitment to Ireland does not end here. I will continue to serve my people by using my international platform to promote. Irish interests abroad, to strengthen our economic opportunities, and to advocate for transparency and responsibility in public life at home.
“This campaign has sparked an important conversation about democracy in Ireland about who gets to stand, who gets to choose, and how we can ensure that the presidency truly belongs to the people. That conversation will not end with my withdrawal.”
Just because Conor is bowing out now doesn’t mean he won’t run for Presidency in the future. The UFC star confirms that this will not be his last election.
“My first venture into politics, and although I have chosen to withdraw this round, meaningful progress has been made,” McGregor said. “I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election. You will see me canvassing again in the future, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.
This is not the end, but the beginning of my political journey. I am driven by a commitment to improve lives, defend rights, and serve the Irish people with dedication and integrity. I will continue to serve my people on the global stage lobbying for Ireland’s best interests socially and economically – of that there is no doubt. This is a marathon. Not a sprint!”
We’ll see if Conor holds true to that word. For now, we have to look forward to him hyping up his potential UFC return.
