Conor McGregor is running for Presidency.
Yes, the former UFC Lightweight Champion will run for Irish presidency later this year. McGregor’s name has been all in the headlines as of late because of his meeting with Donald Trump himself. But while the 36-year-old is getting into the seedy world of politics, what about the UFC?
McGregor has said it himself, he’s got two fights left on his UFC contract. Originally, Conor McGregor’s next fight was supposed to be against Michael Chandler. The two even coached The Ultimate Fighter 31 with an eventual showdown planned. However, that fight never came to fruition.
As you can imagine, Conor isn’t stepping into the octagon anytime soon. With his political aspirations, there’s no way that the former two-division champion can focus on fighting right now.
“Like I said, I’ve got two fights on the contract. I’m in negotiations,” McGregor said to the media following a BKFC 70 event. “Last week, something happened to me. I went to the White House and my country is in my—my heart bleeds for my country right now. So there’s a lot of stuff going on back home.”
Despite his attention being elsewhere, Conor promises to make one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.
“I’m happy with what I’ve done. There’s something else for me that’s in my gut right now and that’s kind of where I’m going, so we’ll see. Greatness don’t rush, also. Greatness does not rush. There was an opportunity or a deal, we’ll say, to fight in Alcatraz only recent. There’s an event going on in Alcatraz in I believe June. And they came to me and it wasn’t my worth. As a fighter, we’ve got to know our worth. I hold every pay-per-view record in the book. I hold every gate record in the book. And my comeback will be slated as the greatest comeback or the biggest, most-anticipated comeback of all time, and right now Ireland is in my thoughts and that’s where I’m at. It will happen, I’m sure and it’s always great to be here and there you go.”
Conor McGregor hasn’t fought since UFC 264. He suffered back-to-back losses to Dustin Poirier. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess on whether Conor will return to the octagon or not. He doesn’t need to prove himself anymore and he’s still making a ton of money outside of the UFC. It wouldn’t be surprising if he made his return as he loves the sport. But it also wouldn’t be shocking if he never stepped back into the octagon.
