Unfortunately, we won't be getting Jorge Masvidal vs. Colby Covington anytime soon.
The former friends have been feuding for over a year now and the rivalry has gotten to the point where the two should settle their differences inside of the octagon. Both Covington and Masvidal are coming off losses to UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman, and while the UFC fighters have the possible option of facing Gilbert Burns or Leon Edwards, both men can adjust their standings in the rankings if a bout between them occurred.
However, according to Masvidal, he simply has no interest in facing the former UFC Interim Welterweight Champion, citing that Covington wouldn’t be much of a challenge to him:
“The fragile guy with the MAGA hat, definitely not him,” Masvidal said when referencing Covington. “Cause he got finished by this guy with a full training camp. He had like 12 weeks and he got finished by that guy. That guy’s below me and this dude by a lot.
“Six days’ notice and I was nowhere near getting hurt or getting put out. The gas tank wasn’t the best but I wasn’t going nowhere as far as damage goes. Everybody could see that. So definitely not that punk.”
It didn’t take long for Covington to respond to Masvidal’s comments, stating that he “used to beat the sh*t out of him” during practice and questioned why Masvidal would want to fight a guy that he has no chance to win against. The former ATT member makes it clear that his legacy wouldn’t be defined by a win over a journeyman like him (Transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting):
“I could care less about fighting him,” Covington said on Submission Radio. “I don’t need to prove to fight him to prove my legacy in this organization and my legacy. My legacy won’t be defined by fighting journeyman like him. So, I could care less if I ever fight him. I’m gonna get my rematch with Marty Fakenewsman and I will hold that undisputed title soon, and anybody can come get it. I take on all-comers.
I’m not a little b*tch like Street Judas, ‘oh, I don’t want to fight him’. You know, he wants to pick and choose easy fights, ‘oh, I want to fight Nate Diaz. Oh, I want to fight Demian Maia, avenge my loss to a f*cking 40-year-old virgin’. So, I’m not a little b*tch like Street Judas, I’ll beat everybody in the world, and I don’t need to pick and choose my fights like him.”
