Will we finally get Leon Edwards vs. Jorge Masvidal?
Masvidal has been angling for a UFC return over the last year. Originally, the BMF Champion was trying to get on the UFC 314 card, but no such luck. However, that isn’t stopping “Gamebred” from having one last run in the UFC. What better return match than to fight the guy that sparked Masvidal’s career as a fan favorite?
The 40-year-old called out the former UFC Welterweight Champion:
“We’ll figure it out for the next one,” Masvidal told Submission Radio when asked why he wasn’t fighting at UFC 314 in Miami. “We’re coming back, we’re going to make it work. But like I said, as long as it’s a Leon-type fight, we’ll definitely be the one to get it right. Leon fight against your boy, [that’s] where we need to be at.”
The issue between Edwards and Masvidal stemmed back from UFC London in 2019 where an argument between the two turned into an altercation that the former UFC fighter coined, “two piece and a soda”. For years, Edwards was trying to get Masvidal into the octagon and there was a planned clash between the two at UFC 269, but the latter pulled out due to injury. The bout never happened, but Masvidal wants to circle back to it and whoop Leon’s ass.
“I’ll whoop that boy’s ass tomorrow,” Masvidal said when asked about a timeline for his return. “He’s always known since day-motherf*cking-one. Since the first day he crossed the line with me — pop, pop, pop, pop, pow! He knows. Don’t play that with me. I’ll come off the couch and whoop your ass. So be careful what you say, Leon.
But I’m just chilling right now. Nothing’s promised. And I am 40 years old. Everything’s gotta be right. You guys gotta tell me, I’ve gotta see, and this and that, because I did kind of retire, you know? But if it’s right and they tell me, ‘We’re gonna take care of this, we’ve got the Leon fight,’ let’s go! I’m ready.”
The question here is whether Dana White is even interested in bringing back Masvidal. The former UFC welterweight retired following his loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. White did address the possibility of Masvidal’s return back in October and stated, “probably not.”. Of course, the UFC CEO can change his mind anytime, but Jorge’s talk about a UFC return is meaningless unless White confirms re-signing the Florida native.
